Ditching the Script: Transforming Your Interview Questions for the Modern Talent Hunt

Updated: Dec 16, 2023

Adam Kirsh - Oct 2023

Let's face it, the age-old interview script is gathering dust. Too basic, too predictable, and frankly, just not cutting the mustard. We're in a candidate-driven market, folks, and it's high time we flipped the script.

Rethinking "Why Should I Hire You?"

This one's the granddaddy of cliché questions. It's not just passé; it's borderline arrogant. We're past the times when we had the luxury of candidates vying for our attention. Today, it's about what WE offer THEM. Want the real scoop on a candidate's intent and interest? Try asking;

"What do you like about us and what intrigues you about the role?"

Trust me, it's a game-changer.

The Irrelevance of "Why Did You Leave Your Last Job?"

Honestly? This question is a dud. It’s more about politeness than utility. The labour market's a rollercoaster lately, and employment histories are more like modern art than linear timelines. Instead, how about asking;

"Help me understand why we are meeting/talking today, what's the reason for entertaining something new?"

Now that’s a conversation starter.

"What is Your Biggest Weakness?" Oh, Please:

Stop. Just stop. No one's going to tell you they're horrendously disorganized or a serial procrastinator. Flip the negativity on its head. Ask,

"If you had to pick one area where a new manager could really help you improve and grow, what would that be?"

Positivity for the win.

Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?

If you find someone who's psychic, let me know. Life twists and turns, and so do careers. Scrap this. Instead, ask,

"What are you looking for out of your next role, how do you hope to grow with us?"

Then dive deep with follow-ups. That's where the gold lies.

Any Questions for Us? The Classic Closer

Okay, I'll give this one a pass—it's still relevant. But remember, it’s a two-way street. Candidates' questions can be just as revealing as their answers. So, dazzle them with your responses. Show them why your company is the beacon in a sea of job listings.

Bottom line

Generic interviewing equals generic candidates. Elevate your interview game, and you'll attract the talent you truly deserve. It's time for an upgrade, folks. Your company’s future stars will thank you.
